#Like a dragon ishin remake series
Since 2015’s Yakuza 0, the series has been on top form. “The first reason is that, since we released Yakuza 0 and we fully localised it into other languages, we realised that if we took the time and effort to localise our games… overseas players are going to take the time to play them! The effort goes both ways. “So there's two reasons for why we decided now was the perfect time to bring back Ishin,” explains Like a Dragon: Ishin director, Hiroyuki Sakamoto, via interpreter. Hiroyuki Sakamoto, of RGG Studio.īut, when Like A Dragon has this much on the slate, why did RGG decide now was the right time to remake Like A Dragon: Ishin – a game that takes the cast of the Yakuza franchise back to 1867, to the turbulent Bakumatsu era of Japan’s colourful history? It's nice to know the Like A Dragon/Yakuza formula works this well, no matter the setting. The Judgment series will carry on the more action-focused side of the series, and – finally – we are also getting remakes. For those that are invested in the tale of Kazama Kiryu, a spin-off by the name of The Man Who Erased His Name is planned that’ll examine the story of his life between the events of Like a Dragon 6 and Like a Dragon 8. Coming off the back of the mainstream success that was Yakuza: Like A Dragon, series steward RGG Studio has a bright future ahead – albeit one that’s splintering off into a few paths.įirst up, the Like a Dragon series will continue with the story of new protagonist Kasuga Ichiban with Like a Dragon 8 (the ‘Yakuza’ title has been retired, at this point). Like a Dragon: Ishin launches in February 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.The franchise that was once known as Yakuza has never been bigger. We’ll have to wait and see if the remake has all of the same content as the original game, but Ishin features minigames for chicken racing, fishing, gambling, karaoke, mahjong, Japanese dancing, and udon noodle making. Of course, like with any Yakuza game players can also expect a wide array of minigames, substories, and side content. There are also the dramatic Heat Actions the series is known for, and the one we see in the trailer sees Ryoma summon a tiger to maul a bunch of enemies. One of the more interesting changes with Ishin is that the combat system is built around using swords, as befitting of the time period. Ishin’s gameplay is most easily compared to Yakuza 0, as the game lets players swap between four different styles on the fly Swordsman, Gunman, Wild Dancer, and Brawler. Like a Dragon: Ishin uses a fast-paced action combat system like past games in the Yakuza series, unlike the most recent entry Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Draw your blade and join the revolution in this heated historical adventure.” What is Like a Dragon: Ishin gameplay like? “In 1860s Kyo, a solemn samurai’s fight for justice stands to change the course of Japan’s history forever. Here’s the official description from Ishin’s trailer. Other characters like Goro Majima, Shun Akiyama, and Ryuji Goda portray other figures and characters of the time period. Series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu takes on the role of Sakamoto Ryoma, a real samurai that lived during the period. The game takes place in 1860 in the city of Kyo, a fictionalized version of Kyoto.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is indeed a Yakuza game, sporting the series’ name in Japan as “Ryu Ga Gotoku” roughly translates to “Like a Dragon.” Ishin fills an interesting spot in the series as it is a spinoff, but one that casts prominent characters from across the franchise as historical figures from the Bakumatsu period (1853-1867) of Japan. Like a Dragon: Ishin casts the characters of the Yakuza series as historical figures from the Bakumatsu period of Japan.
